Getting a Cat
The are a number of places to check when you are looking for a new Cat or Kitten.
Firstly you need to decide if you want a moggie or a pedigree.
If you are looking for a moggie check your local charities to see if they have any suitable cats/kittens. Plenty of older cats can give you the companionship you are looking for so don't dismiss them because they are old! Charities normally do house checks and you will be asked to pay an adoption fee which can vary.
You could also check shop & pet shop notice boards and local papers.
If it's a pedigree you are after, do some research on breeds. With so many breeds now available its important you find the right one to fit your life style.
Do you want a laid back cat or one that's bomb proof? You will soon find one you like the sound of, once you have decided you will need to find a breeder. You can either contact a cat club or find a breeder via an on line site or via one of the cat magazines like Your Cat or Cat World.
Make sure you visit the kitten several times so you can see how it reacts with other cats and see how he/she is developing. Most breeders will welcome repeat visits.
Whatever you choose Don't be afraid to ask questions! And check....
Teeth should meet top and bottom.
Eyes should be clear and bright, with no discharge.
Ears should be clean.
Nose should be slightly damp with no discharge.
Fur no signs of flea dirts.
Bottom should be clean.
Stomach should be slightly rounded but not bloated.
He/she should be alert and happy.
And don't forget getting a new Cat or Kitten is a long term commitment, don't rush in to a decision.
